RECYCLE OUR MOST PRECIOUS RESOURCE
The Future of Water Treatment
Vegetated Sand Bed VSB
Treat wastewater using gravity-run, plant-powered, low-cost systems that also provide a natural habitat for many species. Examples of wastewater sources include:
• Municipal wastewater
• Industrial parks
• Landfill leachate
• Food processing facilities
• Recreational facilities
• Mobile homes and RV parks
• Residencial subdivisions
• Golf courses
• Stormwater management
• Gold mines
Reed Bed
RB
Reed Beds are a low-cost and sustainable alternative to conventional biosolids processing.
Conventional sludge dewatering and disposal can constitute up to 50% of total wastewater treatment costs. RBs can eliminate CO2 emitted from the demands of dewatering, transport, and incineration of biosolids.
Convert existing sand drying beds or build new RBs and only have to dispose of accumulated sludge every 10-15 years with 95%-98% volume reduction.

HEAVY METALS
Research in Highland NY demonstrated 100% removal of biochemical oxygen demand
(BOD5) and 99.0% removal of ammonium.
NEWS VSBs treating landfill leachate in NY State average less than 0.1 mg/L iron, less than 3 mg/L TSS and 1 mg/L ammonium in the system effluent.
NEWS VSBs treating gold mine waste water in Ecuador have shown on average a 95.3% removal of Copper and 93.9% removal of Cyanide.
VSB RESEARCH
In many parts of the world, fresh water resources are being depleted at astonishing rates. Unfortunately, conventional wastewater treatment accelerates this problem. In the USA, fresh water is consumed at a rate of 1,100 gallons per day per capita (AQUASTAT 2014). Most of this water passes through conventional wastewater treatment facilities where it is discharged into nearby rivers. The rivers quickly transport it to the ocean where it becomes contaminated with salt. Our "pump and dump" mentality is rapidly reducing the volume of fresh water available for human activity and the environment. The technology of NEWS recharges the groundwater, flows into intermittent streams, or returns treated effluent for reuse by industry and agriculture. If we recycle paper, metals, and glass, why not recycle our most precious resource?
Dr. Ronald L. Lavigne, the CEO of New England Waste Systems Inc., is a pioneer in creating over 100 Vegetated Sand Beds and Reed Beds across New England, South America, and China. These systems are sustainable, cost 1/10 of a standard sewage treatment facility, and have the capacity to recycle our fresh water.
